When my family first moved to Baton Rouge, LA at the end of summer 2013, I needed to rebuild my business in a new city. I ran a special for Fresh48 sessions and April Blackburn was the first to reply and book a session with me. April’s session really stands out because I got lost and ended up being late! I was so stressed and worried; this was my first client in a new town and I was screwing it up! The session went great and April loved her images. I also know April through our local online Facebook groups and attending several of our Baton Rouge ICAN meetings together. See her Fresh48 session here: mydoulaheart.com/alainafresh48/
This past weekend, the Blackburn family received some terrible news. On August 21, sweet Laina, was diagnosed with Pre B Cell Leukemia. She is undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. They live about 2 hours from Children’s Hospital New Orleans, no family locally and Laina has an older brother as well. Their needs will be significant and they will need support and prayers.

Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting and attending a SpinningBabies workshop with Tammy Ryan, the same trainer that held my DONA training in 2013. We had a wonderful turnout with doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, chiropractors, a lovely nurse from Touro in New Orleans, and SIX OB’s from Associates in Women’s Health! We all had a wonderful day of learning how SpinningBabies movement and techniques can work before and during labor. If you have an opportunity to host or attend a workshop in your area, DO IT! Sure, you can get the information online but attending, practicing, and connecting with others is so much better.
Thank you for all that attended and made it such a wonderful day!!

I was contacted in December 2014 by Kim. She was looking for a birth doula to support her and her husband through their birth experience, and a photographer to document it. We met at a local coffee shop and hit it off. It fills my heart with joy knowing that they trusted me to be a part of their birth team.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing little Victoria’s Fresh48 session. What made this session extra special, was that her parents were adopting her! It was a great honor to meet her parents and her birth mother. Thank you for allowing me in for such a special time!

So you know you are wanting to hire a professional photographer, but which session do you choose?! I’m here to break down the different types for you.
Birth photography sessions are a one shot deal, no do-overs. As a birth photographer, I stay on-call for you just as a doula or midwife would. We will have one casual prenatal visit to go over exactly what shots you are wanting photographed, what images you do not want photographed, and any special moments with family or friends you’d like. We discuss your current and previously – if any – pregnancy history, to help guide when I should join you in labor or adjust my on-call times. While we always hope your birth will go exactly as you’d like, emergency situations are also discussed so that I can capture as much as possible and within your comfort limits.
Fresh48 sessions take place within 48 hours of birth during daytime hours. Many parents want professional photos of their new baby to share as soon as possible, but aren’t comfortable with a photographer present at birth and Fresh48 sessions are perfect. They are shot as a lifestyle session and capture parents bonding and feeding, and changing baby. If there are other family members present, some photos are taken with them, but the main focus is baby, lasting about an hour.
Newborn Session Photography
Newborn sessions take place typically before baby meets 14 days old in your home. Newborn sessions are posed, lifestyle, or a mix of both and will sometimes involve a few shots with parents or siblings, lasting about 2-3 hours.
World Doula Week begins with World Doula Day on March 22nd and will go through March 28th annually. March 22 was chosen because it is the spring equinox, which represents the return of fertility in countless cultures. Read more here.
My journey as a birth professional began in 2010 as a birth photographer. I absolutely LOVED my ‘job’, but I was lacking something. Two wonderful and amazing doulas encouraged me to attend DONA training in 2013; I was hesitant but went and there was no turning back! I’m now able to balance both hands on doula work or quietly documenting a clients beautiful birth.
Because I am SO incredibly grateful to all my clients that allow me to do what I love – doula, photography, and encapsulation – I am giving away FOUR amazing prizes for #WorldDoulaWeek! Enter for yourself, your friends or just support by sharing!
Don’t forget to Pin and Share with #WorldDoulaWeek ! GOOD LUCK!!
